About Us

MAKAI Paddlers Society was founded in 2009 by local paddling enthusiasts, Damo Staunton and Paul ‘Watto’ Watkins. Damo and Watto saw an opportunity in the local community for like-minded paddling enthusiasts to meet up regularly for training sessions, friendly competitions and social events. The club has grown to over 80 competitive and social members, with ages spanning from 8 to 75.

We are based on the South Coast of NSW, Australia. We train on Burrill Lake, and paddle downwinds and offshore from Ulladulla Harbour every week of the year. The MAKAI Cup is our flagship event, held every year on the second weekend in February and brings together paddlers from all over the country looking to race in the best conditions the South Coast has to offer.

Junior Paddlers

Our junior paddlers range in ages from 12 - 18 years and focus on aerobic fitness through flat-water paddling.

MAKAI Paddlers is keen to hear from new members who have their own kayak (K1), surf ski or outrigger canoe. We look for members who fit our ohana culture by joining us at social functions as well as volunteering to help the club run some of the best paddling events in the country!
